Masks off

They lie on the ground
Like party crashers,
next to cigarette butts,
the new debris of our lives.

Unthinkable before,
now, a fashion item.
Above the nose, or below?
Form, meet function – please.

My wife, a nurse, tells me
that in the ward, people
can detect a covered smile
just by the look in the eyes.

Will we ever question
a burqa again? Sure.
We hide behind more than
the masks that we can see.

Now is the time to reveal
how many masks we wear.
Keep the ones which love made,
throw hatred’s to the ground.
