Born in Madrid, Spain, Carmen worked as a TV Producer and Director before moving to Canada in the year 2000. As part of her journey, she was installed and served as a Deacon at Metropolitan Community Church of Toronto (MCC Toronto) in 2011 and subsequently ordained as clergy in that denomination, before being admitted into the United Church. Applying her creativity and commitment to faith and justice, Carmen is also the founder of ICM España (MCC Spain) and has many years of experience working with 2SLGBTQI+ community organizations.
Carmen is a gifted speaker and community builder having been invited to share her expertise and insight in conferences and panels on 2SLGBTQI+ spirituality. She is a recipient of the MCC Toronto Vision Alive Award and the Homoprotestante Award for her work in social justice with ICM España. To all of this work Carmen brings a deep understanding of multiculturalism lived out in community and grounded in justice.
Carmen is a Certified Spiritual Care Practitioner (CASC), and a United Church Minister. She obtained her Master of Divinity from Emmanuel College at the University of Toronto, and is working on her Masters in Spiritual Care and Psychotherapy. Carmen has many years of experience working with 2SLGBTQI+ community organizations. She works as a Spiritual Care Practitioner at Sunnybrook Health Sciences Center and is part of Sunnybrook's 2SLGBTQI+ Steering Committee. As part of her work at Birchcliff Bluffs United Church, Carmen developed and coordinated Dorothy's Place, a program for 2SLGBTQI+ older adults, recipient of the Inspire Awards, “Inspiring Community Organization of the Year", in 2020/2021.
